This is the first chapter of a late night 3am off cable not made for profit movie. The premise sounds good but the good bits were used up in the intro and the adverts for it. This was probably an early attempt by the author written in meticulous detail by hand in a lined blue book while in high school to write her first romance that's not a romance with influences from television crime shows . The book has definitely got my attention. Great start to the story. Marian has got in a spot. Jon wants to prove his innocence. Can't wait for next book.
Psychologist, with mental issues of her own, goes to talk to an inmate accused of murdering countless women horrifically. Over and over. They talk. You figure out who the real killer is early. The MC doesn't (of course), but you get to read all her half cocked assumptions. Then he escapes (its in the book blurb, so not a spoiler).
The end.
No joke. Any "romance" was stale and cold. She dresses unprofessionally and slutty to get his attention. He checks out her legs. That's the extent of it. Oh and their fingers brush once. There's some naughty references in the prologue, but nothing in real time.
The story is devoid of tension because you know what is going to happen between the prologue and the blurb - well, maybe going to happen in the next book. Sure didn't happen here.
Riddle me this...how can such a short read be so redundant and repetitive? All Marion's assumptions she thinks about, then a page or two later, repeats. We learn about the murders, then the same info is repeated several more times. I started skipping her internal monologue paragraphs for that reason. Its way too short for that kind of redundancy.
And the cliffhanger was just irksome. I hate sales gimmicks and this story is one. I want to see what happens, but don't know if I trust anything to happen in book 2. The premise was interesting, but it became monotonous fast, only for it to cut off abruptly just when the plot started moving forward. I don't like wasting my time on stories without an arc. I'm out.
